Paul P. Shinto, DDS
Dr. Shinto was born and raised in Southern California. He graduated from UCLA with a degree in Biology and received his DDS degree from Loyola University of Chicago where he received numerous awards for his clinical skills. He was the recipient of the Operative Dentistry Award, and the prestigious Academy of General Dentistry Award, given to the best overall clinician in his class. He has taught at the USC School of Dentistry, is a member of and served as president of the Academy for Excellence in Dentistry, maintains active membership in the Dr. Frank Spear Study Club, Esthetic Alliance Study Club, American Dental Association, California Dental Association, and San Gabriel Valley Dental Society. Because of his lifetime commitment to clinical and professional development, Dr. Shinto is also a member of the Spears Faculty Club. Dr. Shinto is a volunteer provider for the Young and Healthy program which provides free dental care for uninsured and underinsured children in the Pasadena schools.
Dr. Shinto and his wife, Vicki, have served with their church by leading missions teams to Mexico where they have built several houses for needy families and have formed a dental missions team that went to Swaziland where they provided dental care to hundreds of children and adults at the Motshane Hope House. Dr. Shinto was very active as an assistant scoutmaster in his sons' Boy Scout troop and is a proud parent of two Eagle Scouts.
Dr. Shinto and his wife, Vicki, have a daughter, two sons, and one son-in-law. His youngest son, Hunter, will be entering USC Dental School in the fall of 2017. He looks forward to Hunter joining the practice in the future. Dr. Shinto enjoys fly fishing, golf, and spending fun times with his family.
Dr. Pera was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. She completed her
undergraduate education at Claremont McKenna College, where she graduated
cum laude with a major in Biology, was selected to the Phi Beta Kappa
Society, and was a Rose Hills Foundation Scholar. She played NCAA soccer and
softball, was an Academic All-American, an ESPN Academic All-District, and
spent a semester studying abroad in Quito, Ecuador.
Dr. Pera attended UCLA School of Dentistry where she received numerous
clinical and leadership awards including the Section of Prosthodontics Award,
the American College of Dentists Outstanding Student Leader Award, the Dean
’s Scholar award, and the Wyatt Rory Hume award for community service.
She was a volunteer instructor for a Removable Prosthodontics course at UCLA.
Dr. Pera completed the Advanced Education of General Dentistry program at
the highly selective Long Beach VA Medical Center for additional
experience in prosthodontics, oral surgery, periodontics, endodontics, implantology,
and treating medically compromised patients.
Dr. Pera has a passion for serving the less fortunate. She was in charge
of organizing two volunteer clinics: the Inglewood Childrens’ Dental Group
and the Meet Each Need with Dignity (MEND) Clinic in Pacoima. She has
served with several dental missions including trips to Honduras and Mexico.
She volunteers at Project Achieve feeding the homeless, and in the near
future she hopes to continue participating in dental mission trips, mentoring
aspiring and current dental students, and returning to UCLA to volunteer as
an instructor in Restorative Dentistry.
Dr. Pera is a member of the American Dental Association, the California
Dental Association, and San Gabriel Valley Dental Society. She enjoys
backpacking, working out at the boxing gym, and creating new recipes with her
Dr. Funatsu was born in Montebello, California. He and his family were interned at Heart Mountain, Wyoming during WWII. After the war, they moved to Maui where he spent his elementary school years. He attended high school on Oahu at Mid Pacific Institute, a private boarding school. His family then moved to Southern California when he entered college. He received his B.S. and D.D.S. degrees from the University of Southern California. Dr. Funatsu is a former examiner with the California Dental Board which licenses new dentists in California. He is a former Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Restorative Dentistry at USC, and is a former member of the Board of Directors for the San Gabriel Valley Dental Society’s Dental Foundation which funded scholarships for deserving dental students. Dr. Funatsu is currently an instructor with the USC Mobile Clinic, where enjoys mentoring students, helping them to achieve the high standards that he has set for himself. He belongs to several professional organizations including, the Academy for Excellence in Dentistry, of which he was past president, San Gabriel Valley Implant Study Club, San Gabriel Valley Dental Society, American Dental Association, and the California Dental Association. Dr. Funatsu started our practice in 1969. His practice philosophy is based on excellence and doing what is best for his patients. He is beloved by his patients and staff for his kind and caring attitude. He enjoys golf, martial arts (he holds a black belt in judo), reading, and spending time with his family, especially the grandchildren. He is looking forward to the day when he can teach them to golf!
Practice limited to Endodontics
Dr. Jann attended the University of California, Berkeley for undergraduate studies before attending the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry. He graduated near the top of his class while receiving the Award for Anatomy and earning his DDS degree. He completed a general practice residency at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Wadsworth before practicing general and pediatric dentistry for six years in San Francisco. He furthered his dental education at the University of Southern California School of Dentistry specializing in Endodontics where he earned his Endodontic Specialist Certificate.
Dr. Jann is a former Clinical Instructor of Endodontics at USC School of Dentistry where he was awarded Clinical Instructor of the Year. Not to take sides in the great rivalry between USC and UCLA, he is also a former Lecturer of Endodontics at UCLA School of Dentistry where he was the recipient of the Resident's Choice Award. Dr. Jann is past president of the Pasadena Academy of Dentistry and is a current member of the American Dental Association, the California Dental Association, and the San Gabriel Valley Dental Society.
His experience in providing general and pediatric dentistry compassionately has attributed to his prominence as one of the finest Endodontists in Pasadena for over twenty years. During that time his practice philosophy was and currently is consistent with the kind, gentle, and compassionate approach to patient care that Dr. Shinto and Dr. Funatsu reflect.
