Mouth Burns Can be Painful

If you have just burned your tongue after taking a sip of hot coffee or tea, you do not have to suffer, as there are plenty of things you can do to help soothe the pain.

Burning your tongue, or any part of your mouth for that matter, can be quite painful, taking a bite too quickly of that pizza that was too hard to resist can result in a scorching pain that could result in a burned mouth, tongue or even burned gums. However, according to your dentist, there are some things you can do to alleviate the soreness.

The damage has already been done, and although it may have been an embarrassing situation, your dentist explains that the first step is to put something cool and soothing in your mouth as quickly as possible. Sucking on a Popsicle or an ice cube can help ease the burn. You should also coat your mouth with another layer of relief. Milk, yogurt, or something similar is an excellent choice because it offers immediate relief.

After you have taken the first step, you may want to consider acetaminophen, aspirin, ibuprofen, or another over the counter pain medication to help with the pain. Another product that may help to soothe and cover the burn is called Orabase, which is available from your local pharmacy.

Once the burn on your gums, mouth, or tongue starts to heal, your dentist advises that you stay away from foods that could cause additional pain. Avoid crunchy, sharp, and spicy foods that could make the burn worse. Also, steer clear of citrus fruits and other foods that will feel like acid should they be exposed to the lesion.

To speed up the healing process, you may want to try vitamin E. Squeeze a capsule over the burn, which can help regenerate your skin and tissue. Never touch the area. Make sure that you keep the burn clean, continue to brush your teeth and give the wound time to heal, remember, your body is remarkable at healing itself.

If the pain persists for more than a week, it is recommended that you see your medical provider.

Burns can be prevented if you use common sense. Avoid beverages or foods that look hot, or that have come straight out of the oven or off the stove. Take small bites or sips if you suspect something is too hot as it may prevent a larger burn.
