April is National Oral Cancer Awareness Month

April is National Oral Cancer Awareness Month. While it’s important to be aware all year round, April is the chance to remind yourself and those around you how important it is to keep track of what goes on with your teeth and gums and everything else in your mouth.

Be Part of the Awareness

If you notice anything suspicious, like a lump, bump, rough spot, red, or white patch, that doesn’t go away within two weeks, schedule a dentist’s appointment.

An examination with Dr. Paul Shinto, Dr. Bert Funatsu, or Dr. Kyle Low will help detect anything that doesn’t look quite right. If anything is suspicious, an appointment with an oral surgeon and a biopsy may be recommended.

The Earlier the Better

Just like all health problems, early detection is the key to a longer life. When all oral cancers are detected in the early stages, there is a much better chance of survival.

If you or someone you know suspect’s oral cancer contact your dentist right away.

What Your Dentist Can Do to Help Prevent Oral Cancer

Your dentist in Pasadena is usually the first to notice anything strange happening on your cheeks on your tongue or at the back of your throat.

People often ignore lumps, bumps and anything else. That sore throat that goes away after your morning coffee could mean something, but often times you’ll ignore it. Your dentist is able to spot anything that looks suspicious.

A Comprehensive Dental Exam in Pasadena

A comprehensive dental examination starts with scheduling an appointment with Dr. Paul Shinto and one of his team members from his dental practice in Pasadena.

During your exam, you and your dentist will discuss your medical and dental history. Your exam will also consist of x-rays, digital pictures, and old restoration checks. Of course, your teeth will be checked for decay and your gums for disease.

Your comprehensive dental examination also includes an oral cancer screening. This thorough checkup gives your dentist a clear picture of what is going on as he checks your throat, neck, head, and every inch of your oral cavity.

Dr. Shinto and his team of Pasadena dentists recommend twice-yearly comprehensive dental exams or more if you are susceptible to any type of cancer.

Celebrate National Cancer Awareness Month with a Checkup

Do your part and schedule a dental checkup and checkups for your entire family in Pasadena. Early detection is the key. Schedule your appointment today.

A New Life with Dental Implants in Pasadena

You don’t have to spend the rest of your life wearing dentures or dental bridges thanks to dental implants.

While implanting something into your jaw to replace a tooth is nothing new, they would use everything from a carved tooth to animal teeth and seashells in the old days, it’s much better than it used to be and in most cases a success. You can only imagine how many dental implant failures occurred in Ancient Greece.

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are surgically placed in or on your jawbone acting as natural tooth roots with the post fusing itself to the bone. This is a process called osseointegration.

Once the implants have healed, which can take anywhere from six months to a year or more if you need bone grafting, artificial natural looking teeth are placed on top of the screws.

The posts will last for the rest of your life and so will your teeth as long as you practice good oral hygiene. While the teeth won’t decay, they still need to be cleaned.

Brushing twice, flossing once each day, and scheduling regular dental checkups  is the best way to keep your dental implants healthy.

Good Candidates for Dental Implants

While 95 percent of people are good candidates for dental implants, even people with dentures can have dental implants, people who smoke and people who suffer from certain systemic diseases may have implant failure.

If you do smoke, quit as it hampers the healing process. It is also important to remember that people who smoke have a higher risk of gum disease as well.

Bone Grafting

For people who do not have enough jaw to support the implant post bone grafting may be recommended.

Bone grafting restores jaw function, and facial contour while encouraging tissue growth. Bone graft surgery for dental implants adds a few weeks or months to overall healing time as the bone graft must be fused to the bone before continuing with the dental implant process.

Mail Order Braces Aren’t All That

Mail order braces are popping up everywhere. You see ads for clear braces on social media and all over the net. However, mail order braces aren’t all they are cracked up to be and could actually harm your smile.

The Problem with Braces on the Internet

Invisible braces will not suit everyone. People with severe under and over bites and people who have large spaces between teeth may not be eligible candidates for clear braces. However, those people can still order braces online.

All anyone has to do is send in some pictures and voila, your new clear braces will be shipped to you for use. It really is just like that.

With mail order braces, there is no consultation with a dentist or orthodontist, and no one to tell you that you shouldn’t wear clear braces.

Sadly, ill fitting braces, whether they are removable or not, can harm your smile by overcrowding or pushing your teeth into a position that they shouldn’t be in.

The Best Solution for Crooked Teeth

If you have mild to moderate tipped or crooked teeth, schedule an appointment with Dr. Kyle Low is our Invisalign specialist. As Dr. Low is a licensed and preferred Gold Status Invisalign® provider, you know that you are getting the best care possible.

If you follow Dr. Shinto’s Blog, you will remember that Invisalign® is a clear braces prescription that is custom made to suit your smile. With Invisalign®, you are in the driver’s seat, as you will have x-rays, digital pictures and a doctor’s recommendation.

Worn 22 hours every day Invisalign® takes between 6 to 12 months to complete. You remove your clear aligners when you eat, drink, brush, and floss.

You will be prescribed between 11 and 31 sets of aligners that you swap out every 7 to 14 days. You will only need to see your Pasadena dentist every six weeks to make sure everything is going to plan.

Invisalign® for the Best Smile

Just like mail order braces, Invisalign® isn’t for everyone. Only a licensed and preferred clear braces provider can determine if you and Invisalign® are a good fit.

If you have been thinking about mail order braces, think again and schedule an appointment with Dr. Paul Shinto and his team of dentists. After all, it’s better to be safe than sorry because mail order braces could cause you more harm than good.

Call for a no obligation Invisalign® virtual consultation in Pasadena today.

CEREC® Pasadena for a Remarkable Smile

CEREC® is a remarkable treatment that replaces dental crowns in a single day. Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics, or CEREC®, utilizes same day dentistry technology making the entire dental crown process easier..

CEREC® for Dental Crowns

CEREC® is made from biocompatible dental materials matched to the rest of your smile. If you and your team of Pasadena dentists determine that you are a good candidate for CEREC®, digital pictures and impressions are taken before being sent to a computer that is loaded with the CEREC® software. Once your dentist is satisfied with the results the images are downloaded to the onsite-milling machine for fabrication. As you can imagine, this makes the entire process more streamlined and less time consuming.

Conventional Dental Crowns take Time

Conventional metal to porcelain and metal crowns require two, or sometimes three dental appointments. CEREC® is completed in a single dental visit. Conventional crowns require messy impressions; same day dentistry uses digital impressions. Metal to porcelain and metal crowns also require temporary crowns. Again, CEREC® is completed in a single dental visit and requires no temporary crowns.

Why CEREC®?

Because you don’t require multiple dental visits with CEREC.  When you weigh out your time and commitment CEREC® is the more affordable way to go.

Is CEREC® for Everyone?

According to Dr. Paul Shinto and Dr. Kyle Low, same day dentistry is the perfect solution for many. However, you will need to schedule an appointment to be sure.

Same day dental crowns repair a multitude of problems including chipped and cracked teeth and teeth that are badly stained. Your Pasadena dentist may also recommend CEREC® for old dental crowns, inlays and onlays.
