Frequently Asked Questions

Am I a candidate for Invisalign?

Teeth that are crooked, crowded, and overlapped, or that have gaps can have profound results on one’s oral health beyond their appearance. Patients with misaligned teeth will most commonly suffer from periodontial disease, gum recession, and broken or chipped teeth throughout their lifetime, all of which will negatively affect one’s oral health and self-confidence. If you are affected by some of the above situations, Invisalign may be the solution for you.

What does Invisalign involve?

After an exam and imaging, customized clear aligners are fabricated from a digital 3D rendering of the patient’s mouth. Translucent attachments are sometimes placed on the tooth surface to provide leverage points in order to move the tooth more predictably and then removed once treatment is completed. Patients are monitored and guided through the entire process as they change through the series of aligners.

Does it hurt?

It’s normal to experience pressure and/or soreness as your teeth begin to shift and as the patient gets used to wearing the aligners. Overall, Invisalign aligners feel less stressful in the mouth than metal braces.

Am I able to remove the aligners myself?

Yes, you can remove them when eating, brushing, flossing, or whenever you please, but be careful not to misplace them! Keep in mind, Invisalign will only work if they are in your mouth, so try not to be without them for long. It is also recommended to brush after eating before placing the aligners back in the mouth to prevent them from staining.

How long does it take?

Even though Invisalign has been shown to work almost twice as fast as conventional metal braces, the exact treatment time will vary from person to person. Each treatment is carefully planned and customized to the individual.

Do I have to wear a retainer?

It is highly recommended to wear a retainer in order to prevent any teeth from relapsing into their previous position.

How Is Invisalign Different from the DIY Clear Aligner products?

There are numerous Do-It-Yourself At-Home options promising straighter teeth with clear aligners, similar to Invisalign. However, these alternative products are done without the supervision of a dentist that can prevent issues from occurring or steer you back onto the path to a healthy straighter smile. Your progress is more closely monitored and therefore, significantly safer.
