Paul P. Shinto, DDS
Dr. Shinto was born and raised in Southern California. He graduated from UCLA with a degree in Biology and received his DDS degree from Loyola University of Chicago where he received numerous awards for his clinical skills. He was the recipient of the Operative Dentistry Award, and the prestigious Academy of General Dentistry Award, given to the best overall clinician in his class. He has taught at the USC School of Dentistry, is a member of and served as president of the Academy for Excellence in Dentistry, maintains active membership in the Dr. Frank Spear Study Club, Esthetic Alliance Study Club, American Dental Association, California Dental Association, and San Gabriel Valley Dental Society. Because of his lifetime commitment to clinical and professional development, Dr. Shinto is also a member of the Spear Faculty Club. Dr. Shinto is a volunteer provider for the Young and Healthy program which provides free dental care for uninsured and underinsured children in the Pasadena schools.
Dr. Shinto and his wife, Vicki, have served with their church by leading missions teams to Mexico where they have built several houses for needy families and have formed a dental missions team that went to Swaziland where they provided dental care to hundreds of children and adults at the Motshane Hope House. Dr. Shinto was very active as an assistant scoutmaster in his sons' Boy Scout troop and is a proud parent of two Eagle Scouts.
Dr. Shinto and his wife, Vicki, have a daughter, two sons, and one son-in-law. His youngest son, Hunter, attends USC Dental School. Team Shinto looks forward to the day that Hunter joins the practice. Dr. Shinto enjoys fly fishing, golf, and spending fun times with his family.
Gizelle Pera, DDS
Dr. Pera was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. She completed her undergraduate education at Claremont McKenna College, where she graduated cum laude with a major in Biology, was selected to the Phi Beta Kappa Society, and was a Rose Hills Foundation Scholar. She played NCAA soccer and softball, was an Academic All-American, an ESPN Academic All-District, and spent a semester studying abroad in Quito, Ecuador.
Dr. Pera attended UCLA School of Dentistry where she received numerous clinical and leadership awards including the Section of Prosthodontics Award, the American College of Dentists Outstanding Student Leader Award, the Dean ’s Scholar award, and the Wyatt Rory Hume award for community service. She was a volunteer instructor for a Removable Prosthodontics course at UCLA.
Dr. Pera completed the Advanced Education of General Dentistry program at the highly selective Long Beach VA Medical Center for additional experience in prosthodontics, oral surgery, periodontics, endodontics, implantology, and treating medically compromised patients.
Dr. Pera has a passion for serving the less fortunate. She was in charge of organizing two volunteer clinics: the Inglewood Childrens’ Dental Group and the Meet Each Need with Dignity (MEND) Clinic in Pacoima. She has served with several dental missions including trips to Honduras and Mexico. She volunteers at Project Achieve feeding the homeless, and in the near future she hopes to continue participating in dental mission trips, mentoring aspiring and current dental students, and returning to UCLA to volunteer as an instructor in Restorative Dentistry.
Dr. Pera is a member of the American Dental Association, the California Dental Association, and San Gabriel Valley Dental Society. She enjoys backpacking, working out at the boxing gym, and creating new recipes with her crockpot.
Bert K. Funatsu, DDS
Dr. Funatsu was born in Montebello, California. He and his family were interned at Heart Mountain, Wyoming during WWII. After the war, they moved to Maui where he spent his elementary school years. He attended high school on Oahu at Mid Pacific Institute, a private boarding school. His family then moved to Southern California when he entered college. He received his B.S. and D.D.S. degrees from the University of Southern California. Dr. Funatsu is a former examiner with the California Dental Board which licenses new dentists in California. He is a former Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Restorative Dentistry at USC, and is a former member of the Board of Directors for the San Gabriel Valley Dental Society’s Dental Foundation which funded scholarships for deserving dental students.
Dr. Funatsu is currently an instructor with the USC Mobile Clinic, where enjoys mentoring students, helping them to achieve the high standards that he has set for himself. He belongs to several professional organizations including, the Academy for Excellence in Dentistry, of which he was past president, San Gabriel Valley Implant Study Club, San Gabriel Valley Dental Society, American Dental Association, and the California Dental Association. Dr. Funatsu started our practice in 1969. His practice philosophy is based on excellence and doing what is best for his patients. He is beloved by his patients and staff for his kind and caring attitude. He enjoys golf, martial arts (he holds a black belt in judo), reading, and spending time with his family, especially the grandchildren. He is looking forward to the day when he can teach them to golf!
Brian Edwards, DDS
Please join us in welcoming back Dr. Brian Edwards to our team. As some of you may already know, Dr. Funatsu has cut back on his days due to a mild stroke. Dr. Edwards has re-joined our team so that we may continue to offer the highest quality care to our patients while continuing to offer convenient days and times.
Dr. Edwards is dedicated to quality patient care, state of the art technology, and attention to detail while educating patients about their oral health, and creating beautiful smiles.
He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California with a degree in Biological Sciences, cum laude. Before entering dental school, Dr. Edwards decided to take a year off to see the world. He spent six months backpacking through Western Europe, New Zealand, and Australia. This experience allowed him to meet fascinating people, immerse himself in unique cultures, and gain a greater perspective on life. His next journey was off to the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry in San Francisco where his lifelong commitment to dentistry began. Upon dental school graduation, Dr. Edwards received several prestigious awards including the Quintessence Restorative Award for outstanding performance in clinical dentistry, OKU Clinical Excellence Award for removable prosthodontics, and the Fredrick T. West Clinical Award for outstanding performance in all five pre-doctoral Orthodontic courses. He is a certified Invisalign provider, a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, the American Dental Association, the California Dental Association, and the National Eagle Scout Association.
Dr. Edwards married his high school sweetheart, Ashley, and they truly love being parents to their sons, Hudson and Chase and twins, Nixon and Reid. They enjoy spending time with their family and friends, eating delicious food, traveling, and doing Crossfit workout programs.
